High School Germany - SEP 2020

Autumn 2020 and Covid 19 ist still quite a challenge, BUT there are happy news as well: in September we welcomed 82 exchange students from all over the world #GLS in Berlin.

Everybody was a bit nervous, but it worked out well, VERY well: in August and September 2020 more than 80 exchange students from Europa, Asia and the Americas could travel to Berlin, their first stop in Germany.

Most of them (37) will go to a secondary or boarding school in Berlin, some in Koblenz on River Rhine (17), Nürnberg (13), Bremen (3), Lübeck (3), Bayreuth (2) and one in Hamburg.

The GLS high school exchange program in Germany works like this: two times a year - in AUG/SEP and in FEB - all exchange students meet for a weekend on the GLS campus, a green oasis in a very trendy district in central Berlin.

On the GLS campus in Berlin: the GLS high school team welcomes everybody and inroduces them to everything they need to know about the secondary school system in Germany.

The starter weekend in Berlin is a great opportunity to get to know each other. Our exchange students come from all over the world, countries of origin this year are:

  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Ecuador
  • France
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Russia
  • Singapore
  • Slovakia
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • Vietnam
  • USA

For European exchange students entry to Germany was less of a challenge. Some overseas students from Asia and Latin America had a European passport, which helped. And some students, mainly from Korea, Vietnam and Russia, do a 2 or 3 year program in Germany, which means they had been in Germany before and stayed in their boarding schools.

One student had to do a 5 day quarantaine on the GLS campus in Berlin before being able to travel to her host family in Bremen.

After their starter weekend on the GLS campus in Berlin, ways part: while most exchange students stay in Berlin and attend a secondary school in the German capital, others travel to their host families or boarding schools in other cities of Germany.

Corona will be with us for a while, but these exchange students are making the best of it :-)

And we look forward to welcoming another 20 students in February 2021!!
