Could you introduce yourself and your city?

Hi, I'm Maja. I grew up in Dresden and feel very close to the city. Professionally I am a trained pedagogue and have already worked in different countries during my career. Meanwhile I have two children and travel less, so I'm even more happy that international students are now coming to Dresden. I am looking forward to showing you the city and introduce you to its wonderful and unique atmosphere! In my freetime I like to spend time with my family and friends, reading and doing sports.

Why I like Dresden: the big terrace at the Elbe shore and the daily events in the summer months there, the old town of Dresden with many historical buildings like the “Frauenkirche”, “Semperoper”, “Zwinger” and of course the lively Neustadt quarter with many cafés, bars and restaurants

Kannst du bitte dich und deine Stadt kurz vorstellen?

Hallo, ich bin Maja. Ich bin in Dresden aufgewachsen und fühle mich der Stadt sehr verbunden. Beruflich bin ich ausgebildete Pädagogin und habe im Laufe meiner Karriere bereits in verschiedenen Ländern gearbeitet. Mittlerweile habe ich zwei Kinder und reise weniger, umso mehr freut es mich, dass nun auch internationale Studenten nach Dresden kommen. Ich freue mich darauf, euch die Stadt zu zeigen. Meine Freizeit verbinge ich gerne mit meiner Family und meinen Freunden, lese gerne oder mache Sport.

What can you tell us about the city of Dresden?

Dresden is located in the eastern part of Germany and belongs to one of the most popular University cities of the country. Dresden offers a wide variety of free-time activities and events especially for young people.

When the weather is nice many people meet at the terrace shore by the river Elbe to talk, relax, make music or to barbecue.

During the summer months Dresden offers many open air events at the Elbe, like concerts or movie nights (“Filmnächte am Elbufer”). People in Dresden like to meet there with their friends and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere there.

Dresden also offers many attractions like a forest climbing park, a Go Kart track, lasertag, indoor swimming pools, many fitness studios, shopping malls, a big zoo, museums and galleries.

Was kannst du uns über die Stadt Dresden erzählen?

Dresden liegt im Osten Deutschlands und ist eine sehr beliebte Universitätsstadt. Dresden bietet eine Vielzahl von Freizeitaktivitäten und Veranstaltungen speziell für junge Leute.

Bei schönem Wetter treffen sich viele Menschen auf der Terrasse am Elbufer, um sich zu unterhalten, zu entspannen, zu musizieren oder zu grillen.

In den Sommermonaten bietet Dresden viele Open-Air-Veranstaltungen an der Elbe, wie z.B. Konzerte oder Filmnächte am Elbufer. Die Dresdner treffen sich dort gerne mit ihren Freunden und genießen die schöne Atmosphäre.

Dresden bietet auch viele Attraktionen wie zum Beispiel einen Waldkletterpark, eine Go-Kart-Bahn, Lasertag, Hallenbäder, viele Fitnessstudios, Einkaufszentren, einen großen Zoo, Museen und Galerien.

One of the most beloved quarters is the so called “Dresdner Neustadt” with many cafés, bars, restaurants and life music acts on the street. It is always fun to walk through the streets and to settle down on a comfortable spot to watch the bustle.

With public transportation, by bike or even by foot everything is reachable very fastly and easily.

Eines der beliebtesten Viertel ist die sogenannte "Dresdner Neustadt" mit vielen Cafés, Bars, Restaurants und Life-Musik-Acts auf der Straße. Es macht immer wieder Spaß, durch die Straßen zu gehen und sich an einem gemütlichen Platz niederzulassen, um das Treiben zu beobachten.

Mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln, dem Fahrrad oder auch zu Fuß ist alles schnell und einfach zu erreichen.

How do the students arrive in Dresden?

All GLS high school students first take part in an orientation weekend in Berlin and travel to Dresden afterwards. They arrive in Dresden either by train or by bus. Maja and the students' host families welcome them when they arrive at the station.

This is a very happy and exciting moment for everyone, as they finally get to meet each other! So from the beginning you get to know me and I will be your contact person for the duration of your stay if you have any problems or questions.

Wie kommen die Studenten in Dresden an?

Alle GLS-Schüler*innen nehmen zunächst an einem Orientierungswochenende in Berlin teil und reisen anschließend nach Dresden. Die Anreise nach Dresden erfolgt entweder mit der Bahn oder mit dem Bus. Die Gastfamilien und ich als Koordinatorin begrüßen die neuen Schüler bei der Ankunft in Dresden.

Dies ist ein sehr glücklicher und aufregender Moment für alle, denn endlich lernen sie sich kennen! Von Anfang an lernst du mich also kennen und ich werde für die Dauer deines Aufenthaltes deine Kontaktperson sein, wenn du irgendwelche Probleme oder Fragen hast.

How do you find great host families in Dresden?

I am an open-minded person and like to get to know new people. I always try to find families who share the passion of becoming a host family. For me it is very important to meet the family and visit their home. These visits are mainly to assess their suitability as a host family. In this way, all open questions can be clarified and I get to know the family and their environment better.

Wie findest du tolle Gastfamilien in Dresden?

Ich bin ein aufgeschlossener Mensch und lerne gerne neue Leute kennen. Ich versuche immer, Familien zu finden, die die Leidenschaft teilen, eine Gastfamilie zu werden. Für mich ist es sehr wichtig, die Familie zu treffen und ihr Zuhause zu besuchen. Diese Besuche dienen im Wesentlichen dazu, ihre Eignung als Gastfamilie zu beurteilen. So lassen sich alle offenen Fragen klären und ich lerne die Familie und ihre Umgebung besser kennen.

High school students have school holidays during their time in Germany, for example on Christmas or on Easter. What do the students do during their holidays?

To become a host family means integration and seeing the student as a part of the own family. Many students commence a lot with their host families during the holidays and become involved in their daily routines very well. Furthermore Maja also offers many activities and group travels so you do not have to worry about boredom!

During winter time she can especially recommend you to visit the famous and unique Christmas market called “Dresdner Striezelmarkt”. The Old town is decorated very traditional and pretty and will definitely bring you into Christmas mood!

Schülerinnen und Schüler haben während ihrer Zeit in Deutschland Schulferien, zum Beispiel an Weihnachten oder Ostern. Was machen die Schüler in den Ferien?

Gastfamilie zu werden bedeutet Integration und den Schüler als Teil der eigenen Familie zu sehen. Viele Schüler verbringen die Ferien mit ihren Gastfamilien  und werden sehr gut in ihren Tagesablauf eingebunden. Darüber hinaus biete ich als Koordinatorin auch Aktivitäten an, so dass keine Langeweile zu befürchten ist!

Im Winter ist besonders der berühmte und einzigartige Weihnachtsmarkt "Dresdner Striezelmarkt" sehenswert. Die Altstadt ist sehr traditionell und hübsch dekoriert und bringt bestimmt jeden in Weihnachtsstimmung!

There is also much to do in the surroundings of Dresden, for example hiking through the beautiful “Sächsische Schweiz” or visiting the fairytale castle in Moritzburg.

Auch in der Umgebung von Dresden gibt es viel zu tun, z.B. wandern durch die schöne Sächsische Schweiz oder ein Besuch des Märchenschlosses in Moritzburg.

What if students have problems during their time in Germany, for example with homesickness?

I support you and your host family in all problems and tasks whenever necessary. Because communication is very important to me and I will do my best to help you settle in well and have a great time in Dresden.

Was ist, wenn die Studierenden während ihres Aufenthaltes in Deutschland Probleme haben, zum Beispiel mit Heimweh?

Ich unterstütze dich und deine Gastfamilie bei allen Problemen und Aufgaben, wann immer es nötig ist. Denn für mich ist die Kommunikation sehr wichtig und ich werde mein Bestes tun, damit du dich hier gut einlebst und eine tolle Zeit in Dresden hast.
