Alicia, from Spain, attends a high School in Koblenz. Below she talks about her experiences as an exchange student in Germany (in German & English).

My name is Alicia, I am Spanish although I have been living in Luxembourg for the last three years and I am currently doing a year abroad to learn German, specifically in the city of Koblenz.

Koblenz is a medium-sized city located in the south-west of Germany. It means confluence, name that receives as the crossing between the rivers Rhine and Moselle is produced there. I could talk about its population, I could explain its charming history or other aspects typically used to describe cities, but I think that information can be easily found on the Internet. What it is not explained there is what the experience of an exchange student will really be like, who decides to bet on a language and to mature both intellectually and on a personal level, bearing in mind that he is leaving his comfort zone to face this challenge.

Today, I can assure you that it is totally worth it, to risk a little to receive so much. In this year, I have not only learned a language, but I have matured and grown as a person, I have met many wonderful people from completely different cultures and I have opened my mind. Now I want to explain you why I do not regret choosing Koblenz as a city, how the arrival was, the relationship with the host family, the school and many other aspects.

The first contact I had was with my host family, to whom I greatly appreciate the help and affection with which they made me feel like part of the family. In my opinion the host family in the center of language learning, and plays a very important role in acquiring everyday vocabulary and fluency in speaking. It is very important to talk with them a lot and to not be afraid of making mistakes. The families in Koblenz are all very welcoming, in my case the house has a beautiful view of the Moselle River, and the whole city is surrounded by wonderful landscapes. I had a great time with them; we had a lot of fun playing together, walking or cooking.

I started school shortly after arriving to Koblenz. Actually it was not difficult for me to make friends and get to know my classmates, since they welcomed me into the group with a lot of affection. Both my friends and the teachers have helped me to improve at the language, always explaining me the concepts I did not understand or correcting my mistakes, it is very important to leave the shame aside and speak freely. In Koblenz, the schools have a very good level with exceptional teachers, in my case, the Görres Gymnasium has given me the opportunity to improve my German and to learn many other things.

Koblenz has a wide range of tourist and leisure options. The center of the city is full of shops, restaurants, cinemas, as well as many sports alternatives. I will always remember how much I enjoyed hanging out with my group of friends on Fridays and all the weekend, in a city like Koblenz it is impossible to get bored with the amount of options that it has to have fun. It also has a transportation system that has allowed me to move around the area by train or by bus. There are also a lot of events that occur throughout the year, such as the Oktoberfest, the Christmas market or carnival.

In my opinion, Koblenz is the ideal city to learn German and make an exchange year, since it is neither too small to be boring nor too big to be overwhelming.

In it, I have lived an adventure that has marked me for the rest of my life, in which I have learned a lot and I have met wonderful people that I will never forget. If you are thinking about coming, congratulations for accepting the challenge. I can assure you that you will not regret your choice.

Thanks to GLS for giving me the opportunity to learn German. I encourage all young people who are learning a language to do a year abroad. You're going to have a great time!
